Presentation topic:

Morro the film: A study of art as a tool for exploring indigenous symbolism and cultural history from a subjective perspective

In autumn I began an artistic investigation into the indigenous cultural heritage of El Salvador, my mother's country of origin, and in particular the Nawat pipil. My investigation centered around natural indigo pigment, or añil, which has a rich cultural history that links ancient Mesoamerica with the recent colonial history of the Nawat pipil. I also made connections with ancient Scottish culture, in which natural indigo had special significance for the Pictish people.

This process resulted in the creation of a short experimental film which you can watch here.

The British-Salvadoran artist Felicity White will speak about her recent film piece, Morro, and the investigation it sparked into the cultural and spiritual history of natural indigo pigment (añil). This investigation centered around the heritage of contemporary Salvadoran indigenous people, and also that of ancient Scotland, Felicity’s adopted homeland. Felicity is interested in how art can be used as a tool to explore our subjective sense of connection to ancient mythology, place, and identity.
